Hyperlipidemia can induce or aggravate renal tubulointerstitial injury. Experiments in a complex rat model with chronic glomerulonephritis and long-standing, coexisting hyperlipidemia suggested that induction of xanthine oxidase (XO), with increased oxygen radical generation, is involved in aggravation of tubulointerstitial injury.
