ABSTRACTLung transplantation is currently a well-established method of surgical treatment of several pulmonary diseases. Although it is technically more complex than other types of transplantation, namely heart transplantation, the immediate and mid-term results are excellent, especially when compared with the extremely poor natural history of the basal pathologies. The extreme paucity of organs remains the main obstacle to lung transplantation, as only about 10% of multiorgan donors are lung donors. For this reason, single lung transplantation and, more recently, lobar transplantation, are Performed, when indicated, in preference to bilateral lung transplantation or heart-lung transplantation. The incidence of complications, especially those related to rejection and infection, is also higher than in other types of transplantation. Hence, a much tighter follow-up is required. In the near future, the use of new, more selective immunossupressant drugs may, completely alter this situation.REV PORT PNEUMOL 2000; VI (2): 129-14
