AbstractBackground: Polyketides are structurally diverse natural products with a range of medically useful activities. Non-aromatic bacterial polyketides are synthesised on modular polyketide synthase multienzymes (PKSs) in which each cycle of chain extension requires a different ‘module’ of enzymatic activities.
