The psoriatic plaque contains an increased number of mast cells that are thought to have an important role in the initiation and maintenance of psoriatic lesions through the release of mediators such as histamine, proteoglycans, lipid mediators, and cytokines. It is not known, however, whether the interstitial concentration of histamine (and other mediators) is truly increased in the psoriatic plaque. The aim of the present study was to examine histamine concentration and histamine release from involved and uninvolved skin of psoriatic patients. Intracutaneous microdialysis was performed in lesional and nonlesional skin of 23 psoriatic subjects.
