Diabetes, stress, pharmaceuticals, surgery, and physical trauma can lead to hyperglycemic conditions. A consistent relationship has been found between chronic inflammation and the cardiovascular complications of hyperglycemia. We hypothesized that cardiomyopathy and vasculopathy resulting from acute hyperglycemia are dependent on mannose-binding lectin (MBL) and lectin complement pathway activation. Hyperglycemia was induced in wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 and MBL-null mice after streptozotocin administration.
