The problem of designing an optimum controller based on a quadratic error measure is considered for a distributed parameter system with boundary controls. Solutions to this problem are obtained for the class of distributed parameter systems described by the N-dimensional diffusion equation. Methods for calculating optimum controls and trajectories are also discussed
