THE FRONT OF POPULAR MOBILIZATION, THE BRIZOLIST LEFT AND THE POLITICAL CRISIS OF 1964

Research in the area of ​​Human Sciences proved the performance of politicians, military and businessmen in the episodes that culminated in the 1964 civil-military coup in Brazil. However, a theme still rarely seen in the bibliography is the role played by the leftists in that process. The image that has been left to us is that political radicalization was exclusive of conservative and reactionary elements, while the leftists only defended reforms and democracy. Quite popularized, it is the thesis that alludes to the "preventive blow". The article discusses the political strategies of the leftists who, under Joao Goulart's rule, joined the Popular Mobilization Front (FMP), in particular the followers of Leonel Brizola, known as national-revolutionaries. In a process of increasing radicalization, the left actively participated in political struggles and conflicts, contributing to the impasse that culminated in the overthrow of government and democracy in March 1964
