Phenotypic changes that are inherited in the absence of alterations to primary DNA sequence are termed epigenetic. Epigenetic changes include DNA methylation and modification of amino acids in the tails of histone proteins, which package DNA into chromatin. As part of this special issue, Molecular Biology Select features recent studies related to epigenetics. We discuss how different kinds of histone methylation influence development and chromatin organization. We also highlight studies analyzing the interplay between certain histone methylation marks and DNA methylation in gene silencing, given the importance of these two modifications in development and disease
