The following paper examines how the history of the “German Fürstenbund” from 1785 was told by contemporary and late 19th century politicians and historians. This League was an expression of the dualism between the House of Habsburg and the Hohenzollern dynasty in the late period of the Holy Roman Empire. All four authors under investigation were explicitly or, in the case of Leopold von Ranke, implicitly partisan in favour of either Habsburg or Prussia
