AbstractThis paper introduces a systematic approach for the derivation of models that describe the behavior of composites with a periodic structure. A technique for analyzing the accuracy of the models is addressed. Although the theory has been developed for the general, n-dimensional setting, the main ideas in this paper are presented for the 1-dimensional case only, for reasons of simplicity. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated with numerical examples. Also, the approach has the potential of being used to adaptively select the best homogenization model
