Acute kidney injury, a common complication of cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Ischemic preconditioning at a remote site mitigates ischemia–reperfusion injury and may prevent acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery, thus providing clinical benefit.
