The article presents a wealth of documentation regarding the punitive detention imposed on a married woman of high social status in Salvador between 1788 and 1807. It is a case study that highlights the role of female imprisonment institutions in family relationships. In this sense, it highlights the commitment of people and of several institutions in preserving the honor of married women. On the other hand, it points to the behavior of the woman submitted to seclusion, which could range from submission to divorce, to transgressing behavior.
