PUNIDA E INSUBMISSA: SCANDALO IN THE CONVENT OF LAPA IN SALVADOR.

The article presents a wealth of documentation regarding the punitive detention imposed on a married woman of high social status in Salvador between 1788 and 1807. It is a case study that highlights the role of female imprisonment institutions in family relationships. In this sense, it highlights the commitment of people and of several institutions in preserving the honor of married women. On the other hand, it points to the behavior of the woman submitted to seclusion, which could range from submission to divorce, to transgressing behavior. The first conclusion is the importance of studies on the institutions of female imprisonment in analyzes of the colonial family. The second is the realization that the conjugal relations in the Old Regime did not belong to the private sphere
