Fritz Mauthner is an eccentric and doubting linguist who, in his own period, opened a debate from a new point of view concerning the relationship between language and cognition. He has not presented a systematic plan in the field of language, but the mportance of some of his views has, later, drawn the attention of philosophers. His thought is a reflection of the metaphysical crisis of the beginning of the twentieth century, and many of his fanatical and nihilistic views have their roots in this very same crisis. Investigating Mauthner's thoughts on the history of the philosophy of language, this article locates him among the early 20th century thinkers, evaluates his theories' potentials and shortcomings in comparison with those of Nietzs...
