Abstract Background Benzofuran and its derivatives contain central pharmacophores and are important structures in medicinal chemistry. Chemical synthesis of benzofuran rings often requires expensive catalysts and stringent operational conditions. Biosynthesis is recognized as a promising way to save energy and produce valuable compounds.
