Abstract Background Inflammation has been recognized as a key feature of both type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and atherosclerosis. However, the relationships between circulating levels of novel adipose tissue-derived inflammatory factors, including resistin, vaspin, and visfatin, and the severity of atherosclerosis have not been determined. Moreover, the associations between these inflammatory factors and obesity and insulin resistance in elderly patients remain to be clarified.
