Neurons expressing neuropeptide orexins (hypocretins) in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) and serotonergic neurons in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DR) both play important roles in the regulation of sleep/wakefulness states, and show similar firing patterns across sleep/wakefulness states.
