Experimental study of effect of isobutanol in performance, combustion and emission characteristics of CI engine fuelled with cotton seed oil blended diesel

There are many alternate fuels such as biodiesel and alcohols which has been commercialized in the industrial sector as well as in the transportation sector. In this context, cottonseed oil and isobutanol renewed our interest. Experiments are carried out on the single cylinder four strokes diesel engine capable of producing the power output of 5.2 kW and test is carried at the speed of 1500 rpm and under varying the load condition for the blends of cottonseed oil and isobutanol with diesel prepared by the volume basis i.e., B10, B10 + 5%, B10 + 10%, B20, B20 + 5% and B20 + 10%. The result shows that the addition of cottonseed oil increases the brake thermal efficiency with the reduction in the specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature. Increasing the amount of the cottonseed oil in the blend also reduces the emission parameter such as CO, CO2, NOX and O2 with increase in HC emission. The addition of the isobutanol in the cottonseed oil blend diesel fuel has similar effect to that of addition of pure cottonseed oil in varying proportion that increases the brake thermal efficiency with the reduction in the specific fuel consumption and exhaust gas temperature.
