El Censo Neotropical de Aves Acuáticas en Colombia (CNAA): 2002 - 2011

The Neotropical Waterbird Census CNNA (for its acronym in Spanish) is an international initiative that seeks to contribute to the knowledge and conservation of waterbirds and wetlands in South and Central America. This program started in 1990 with the participation of Chile, Argentina and Uruguay and later other countries joined. Although Colombia began its participation in 1992, only since 2002 has the CNAA operated continuously in our country. At the hemispheric level, the CNAA is coordinated by Wetlands International, and in Colombia through the Colombian Birdwatcher Network RNOA (for its acronym in Spanish) and the Calidris Association. After ten years of this initiative in Colombia with the participation of more than 300 volunteers for census data each year in February and July, 11250 records of 177 species in 38 families in 226 localities of 23 departments were obtained, covering 69% of Colombian territory. The CNAA has allowed the obtention of continuous information about waterbird populations, and enhanced our understanding of these populations in the Neotropics, and has contributed to several important publications
