In the past decade, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a major nosocomial pathogen, causing severe morbidity and mortality at many hospitals worldwide. Because of frequent nosocomial outbreaks of MRSA, this organism has been a focus of epidemiologic studies.
