The Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Quality of Nursing Care in Perspective of Patients in Tehran, Iran

Introduction: Nurses often work in a stressful environment for this reason studies have emphasized to the impact of emotional intelligence on the performance of nurses. The reason is that emotions can influence in establishing and maintaining quality in a care setting. This study was done for identifyingrelationship between emotional intelligence and quality of nursing care in perspective of patients in Tehran University of medical sciences hospitals. Materials and Methods: this was a cross sectional descriptive- analytic study conducted in 2016. The research population was nurses and patients in Tehran University of medical sciences hospitals. Data were collected using standardized questionnaires of emotional intelligence and parasuraman questionnaire (hospital quality assessment). Result: the best score of emotional intelligence domains in nurses was social self- awareness (3.9) and the lowest was self- motivation (3.02). Totally emotional intelligence in nurses was higher than average with 3.2. The results of this study showed that there is no significant relationship between emotional intelligence and quality of nursing care in selected hospitals. Conclusion: Improving emotional intelligence in nurses can improve quality of nursing care. Soit is recommended that authorities consider the promotion of employees' emotional intelligence in hospitals and evaluate the quality of services from perspective of patient
