This article examines how the works of Jean-Baptiste Debret (1768-1848) and François-Auguste Biard (1799-1882) contributed to the construction of the public image of Brazil. It explores how Debret and Biard represented the enslaved populations of African origin and slavery in Brazil, by highlighting the similarities and differences between their respective works. Relying on the analysis of the different contexts of their stays in Brazil and by studying a set of engravings representing slavery produced by the two artists, the article emphasizes the importance of their work in the construction of the public and collective memory of slavery in Brazil
