The aorta is involved in a large variety of diseases and the atherosclerotic aneurysms represent the most common type of these. Recent reports have attempted to clarify the mechanisms, that cause the formation and the progression of the atherosclerotic aneurysms, caused not only by the atherosclerosis. One of the features of this disease is the extensive proteolytic destruction of structural matrix proteins in the aortic wall realized by the matrix metalloproteinases. The atherosclerotic aneurysm can be considered a disease caused by an imbalance between connective tissue destruction and its repair.
