Prior studies have shown that patients with minor ischemic stroke have substantial disability rates at hospital discharge. We sought to determine whether blood pressure variability (BPV) estimated by average real variability (ARV) is one of the predictors of poor outcome at 90 days. Four hundred fifty-one consecutive patients with ischemic stroke treated within 7 days after onset were enrolled prospectively. Baseline magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on all subjects. Blood pressure was measured for all recruited patients every 2 hours in the first 24 hours after admission, followed by measurements collected every 4 hours from day 2 to day 7 after admission.
