INFLUENCE OF WESTERN EUROPEAN CHOREOGRAPHIC CULTURE ON THE FORMATION OF BALLROOM DANCES IN UKRAINE (THE 19TH – EARLY 20TH CENTURY)

The purpose of the article is to study and analyze the development of ballroom dances in Ukraine from the 19th to early 20th century in the context of the influence of Western European choreographic culture; to consider the preconditions for the emergence and development of ballroom culture in the territory of Ukraine and the performance of dances in accordance with regional features. The research methodology consisted in the principles of objectivity, historicism, multifactorness, systematicity, complexity and pluralism; to fulfill the research purpose, the following methods were used: problem-chronological, concrete-historical, statistical, descriptive, and logical-analytical. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the art critical study of the features of ballroom dances in Ukraine of the 19th – early 20th century in the context of the influence of Western European choreographic culture; the research into territorial tendencies of development of ballroom culture; the analysis of the technique of performing ballroom dances in the territory of Naddniprianshchyna, Bukovyna, Galicia and Transcarpathia, as well as the features of dance etiquette of the Ukrainian elite. Conclusions. As a result of the art critical research into the features of ballroom dances in the territory of Ukraine in the 19th and early 20th century in the context of the influence of Western European choreographic culture, it was proved that at the beginning of the 19th century most of the aspects of the European cultural system (theatrical performances, balls, dance, music and literary evenings, etc.) were represented in the territory of Naddniprianshchyna, Bukovyna, Galicia and Transcarpathia; ballroom culture, first of all choreographic, gained special development in the middle of the 19th century; ballroom dances in Ukraine were represented by the most popular dances of the Western European elite – cotillion, quadrille, lancers, waltz, mazurka, polka, landler, krakowiak and others; in the territory of Naddniprianshchyna, choreographic traditions of ballroom dance were expressed by the symbiosis of Russian and European dance vocabulary; the performance of ballroom dances did not involve the possession of impeccable choreographic technique by dance couples, but required unconditional adherence to the rules of dance etiquette
