The current efflorescence of indigeneity in Bolivia and elsewhere has produced many examples of people revalorizing their relationship to the past. It is a mistake, however, to see this as simply the rediscovery of continuities with the past. Following Lazzari it is important to examine the dynamic and novel ways people engage with artefacts in constructing a meaningful presence. The election of Evo Morales as president of Bolivia has opened new spaces for indigenous people to gain recognition but not all communities and not all individuals are equally well placed to take advantage of new political spaces and opportunities.
