In September and December 1746, two Jews named Rachel Hirschel and Joachim Jacob came to Leipzig with the request to be allowed for baptism. They were approved by religious and secular authorities for baptismal instruction. However, after a few weeks, complaints about both of them started which eventually led to the expulsion of Hirschel and the departure of Jacob and thus a premature end of the process of conversion. Drawing on previously neglected archival material this article reconstructs the (failed) process of conversion and examines how the city of Leipzig handled the two Jews willing for baptism. This provides an important contribution to the research on conversion in the early modern period
