Altérité et rapports à l’espace des populations « noires » : regards croisés entre l’Europe et les Amériques

By bringing together various nation-state contexts for comparison and discussion, we highlight the diverse modes of alterization of populations of African descent. The process of ethnicization of local spaces is by no means unrelated to the renewal of racial categories, and territory is once more being convened by societies and institutions – this time in new ways and for other purposes. The fluidity of globalized identities, the locally observed relationships between cultural and political developments that mobilize them, and the political instrumentalisation of territory in order to promote the racialization or ethnicization of populations remind us that identities and territories are primarily social products, which may not therefore be seen as innate or essential. Our analysis focuses on the identification process and leads us to question the actors operating at different levels (global, local), the social dynamics they carry, and the joint role of culture, politics and space in the production of these dynamics
