In this paper, we present a critical approach of several assumptions commonly made in the debates on immigration in France. First, while we confirm the feminization of the migration phenomenon since the 1960s, we put it into perspective by considering long-term evolutions, the invisibility of past migrations of women and so-called irregular immigration. Then, while we also confirm that there are less Europeans among migrants, we posit the hypothesis of a ‘de-Europeanization’ partly resulting from policies favouring European migration.
