The Philippines has been documented to have the “strongest tobacco lobby in Asia,” with tobacco industry interference (TII) in local and national policy-setting and implementation an important roadblock to tobacco control (TC). Characterising TII tactics allows for the design of advocacy strategies and government policies to prevent TII and strengthen TC and regulation, especially with the 4.7% increase in youth smoking prevalence from 2011 to 2015 and the continued heavy burden of tobacco-related deaths in the local healthcare system.
