Background: Traditionally patients after breast cancer surgery have been advised by the physiotherapist to minimise active use of the involved arm to avoid development of postoperative complications. There is, however, minimal scientific documentation to confirm this. The purpose of this study was look at relationships between active use of the involved arm, level of physical activity and the development of lymphedema. Pain, arm function and quality of life were also evaluated. Methods: Ninety women from 32 to 70 years old, undergoing breast surgery with axillary node dissection were examined six -11 months postoperatively.
