The article discusses the functions of objects in the stories of a Russian novelist, Asar Eppel. Objects plays various roles in the stories. Primarily, the objects serve as witnesses of the epoch as well as of the individual human existence. As witnesses, they become equal characters of Eppel’s stories. Moreover, the objects play a significant role in forming the plot of the stories. Old, defective and useless objects correspond well with a gloomy and needless life of people living on the “grassy streets”, and in this way they serve as a code for storytelling and assigning different values.Uniwersytet Pedagogiczny w Krakowie211-22
