Abstract

The Japanese plum is an important crop for southern Brazil, but the productive sector has bottlenecks for increased production, such as the incidence of leaf scalding, climate irregularities and the species reproductive biology. The plum tree has the gametophytic self-incompatibility and this characteristic is governed by a multialelic loci, called Sterility loci, which expresses a ribonuclease capable of degrading its own pollen tubes with the same allelic series, preventing fertilization and fruit set. The identification of the S-alleles with the use of molecular tools and physiological assays helps in the selection of compatible cultivars.
