This thesis presents a method to predict rudder manoeuvres of ships in waves, which is purely based on numerical simulations. For this purpose, a mathematical model of Abkowitz type has been expanded to take the forces and moments due to waves into account. Under the assumption that oscillating wave forces and moments of first order do not influence the trajectory of the manoeuvring ship, only mean wave forces and moments are considered here. The coefficients of this extended mathematical model are determined by Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations of virtual captive model tests in calm water and waves.
