Background: Osteocytes are the key regulator cells in bone tissue, affecting activity of both osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Current in vitro studies on osteocyte-osteoblast interaction are invariably performed with rodent cells, mostly murine cell lines, which diminishes the clinical relevance of the data.
