Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) have previously been implicated in oligodendrocyte maturation and myelination of central nervous system axons. Sildenafil citrate is a phosphodiesterase inhibitor known to block PDE5, which also reduces inflammation in the experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis demyelinating model.
