Surfblogs are a network metaform of a particular kind: they reach beyond what is said to belong to the proper genre of the blog to reflect user information processing at the network scale. This essay relates an experience of participant observation and finds the metatextual to be a fundamental feature in sharing web cultural resources. It then traces the origins of surfblogs from the newsgroups of Usenet to the early Web homepages. The surfblog is found to be a prototype of the blog genre, an innovative model of information diffusion, by Internet user cultures
