In this paper, the general aspects of backlight unit design are considered as a whole. A new key parameter for BLU design, the FWHM to pitch ratio, is introduced and a reasonable value will be proposed. In addition, a new procedure for the uniformity analysis of direct-lit BLUs will be introduced, which is necessary due to the upcoming high-resolution matrix backlight. The aspects and challenges of local-dimming of high-resolution BLUs will be described and amended solutions for excellent results will be proposed. In the last section, new metrics for performance evaluation are introduced
