Lattice dynamics has a major effect on fundamental properties of materials due to the coupling between structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. In particular, stress and strain can alter the physical properties of semiconductors, such as electronic band structure and carrier transport properties. These effects have become particularly important in modern nano-scale electronic devices and are also used to “strain”-engineer materials with tailored properties, both statically and dynamically.
