Data from [3–5]. Intracellular recordings (red trace) occur inside an individual cell, whereas extracellular recordings (blue trace) occur outside the cell and often result in the recording of activity from several different cells. While neuronal models describe the intracellular cell dynamics, experimental recordings often consist of extracellular measurements, particularly when examining network-level dynamics. There is a fundamental difference between the recorded potentials, for example the biphasic waveform of the extracellular recording compared to the monophasic waveform of the intracellular recording.</p
