Aging of soybean biodiesel at an elevated temperature (90 °C) with aeration, simulating diesel engine fuel system conditions, yielded higher molecular weight materials and increased kinematic viscosity. A considerable proportion of the incorporated oxygen was identified as new ester bonds, beyond those in the biodiesel fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). The purpose of this study was to characterize the high molecular weight components of oxidized biodiesel fuel and understand the contribution of esters to the increased viscosity through experiments to depolymerize ester and ether bonds.
