Abstract Following the new trends in manualistic research, in this article we aim to focus the reception of textbooks prescribed by the Department of Education of Santa Catarina to subsidize the studies of the New School in pedagogical meetings of school groups. Thus, besides the manuals we distinguish two complementary sources: the announcements made by the teachers in the pedagogical meetings of the Grupo Escolar Gustavo Richard and the minutes of those meetings. Such sources made it possible to understand which problems were faced by teachers, which textbooks were selected to assist them in solving those problems, as well as which representations the teachers had about the textbooks they had read.
