In order to achieve the desired goals of the fifth generation (5G) wireless systems, exploring new efficient physical layer techniques is necessary. In this thesis, we work in two areas of 5G, namely, waveform design and millimeter waves. In the first part, we investigate several aspects of the recently proposed orthogonal time frequency space (OTFS) modulation, such as OTFS with practically realizable waveforms and channel estimation, and show that it outperforms currently deployed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. In the second part, we study the design of best beamforming weight vectors for the practically feasible low resolution phase shifters for millimeter wave point-to-point and multiuser uplink systems
