Measurement of the time spent producing nociceptive behaviors post-formalin injection in the upper lip of males (♂; panel A) and females (♀; panel B) Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) in phase 1 (0-3 min post-formalin injection) and in phase 2 (15-39 min post formalin-injection) of the formalin test. The nociceptive behavior was measured by the time (in seconds) spent rubbing the orofacial area (3-minute blocks). An illustrative timeline (upper graph) exhibits the nociceptive responses along the time. The arrow in the timeline indicates the formalin injection (time 0) and the gray areas indicate phase 1(0-3 min post-formalin injection) and 2 (15-39 min post-formalin injection) of the formalin test. The average of the sum of phase 1 (bottom graphs in the left corner) and phase 2 (bottom graphs in the right corner) of each group was used to illustrate the data and perform the statistics.
