This thesis offers a re-evaluation of the activities and mindset of a community of natural philosophers who described themselves as curious: the members of the Dublin Philosophical Society (1683?1709) (DPS) and their circle in Ireland and further afield. Although they sometimes perceived themselves as being on the periphery of the learned world, members of the DPS engaged self-consciously and with reflection in that world, and with emerging findings in natural history, cosmology and chymistry. The thesis argues that the DPS, along with like-minded individuals in Ireland and abroad, participated in the making of knowledge in ways that they regarded as new.
