L'habitat et la nécropole celtes de Cagny Carrefour Philippe

International audienceThe site of Cagny on the "Plaine de Caen" was excavated from February to July 2008 and was the first site in Lower Normandy to reap the benefits of large sacle mechanical earth moving, the entire site being revealed over 13.6 acres. Beyond the two enclosures identified during a prior archaeological evaluation, this strategy, prescribed by the Ministry of Culture and Communication's archeological service in Lower-Normandy, resulted in the detection of unexpected remains and occupations. Indeed, we were able to study a settlement dating back to the Middle Neolithic II and a large necropolis with monuments dating to the Early to Middle Bronze Ages. For the Iron Age, features revealing domestic land division dating to the 6th century B.C., twelve habitation enclosures, a family necropolis and two significant roads wre brought to light. We were thus able to study a significant part of a rural domain localised at the crossroads of two routes, established at the end of the Hallstatt period. The heyday of this settlement seems to be the first half of the fifth century B.C. The artefacts discovered in Iron Age contexts - some hitherto unknown - were peculiarly abundant. Certain objects, made of amber and coral, bear witness to long distance trade and doubtlessly reflect the high social status of the first inhabitants oh this rural establishment.Le site de Cagny sur la Plaine de Caen, fouillé de février à fin juillet 2008, est un des premiers sites bas-normands à avoir bénéficié d'un décapage extensif d'une surface d'un peu plus de 5,5 ha. Cette stratégie, décidée par le service régional d'archéologie de Basse-Normandie, a permis, autour des deux enclos identifiés lors du diagnostic archéologique, de mettre au jour des vestiges et même des occupations insoupçonnées. En effet, une occupation du Néolithique moyen II et une importante nécropole à monument du Bronze ancien et moyen ont pu être étudiées. Pour l'âge du Fer, le décapage a révélé une implantation dite "en parcellaire loti" du VIe siècle avant notre ère, douze enclos d'habitats et annexes, une nécropole familiale et deux axes de circulation. C'est donc une part importante d'un domaine rural, installé au carrefour de deux voies et mis en place à la fin du premier âge du Fer, que nous pouvons restituer. L'apogée de cette implantation semble se situer dans la première moitié du Ve siècle avant notre ère. Le mobilier, parfois inédit, découvert dans les contextes de l'âge du Fer, est particulièrement abondant. Certains objets en ambre ou en corail, témoins commerciaux de longue distance, reflètent, sans doute, le statut important des premiers occupants du domaine rural
