Microliths are often found in large numbers in archaeological layers attributed to the Mesolithic. Since their discovery in the last quarter of the nineteenth century they have attracted the attention of prehistorians, firstly because of their small size and the variability of their shapes – oftentimes described as geometric – and secondly because they were the only representatives of what appeared to constitute a prehistoric toolkit within a little understood lithic assemblage and a particularly meagre bone tool industry.
