The Reasons of Absenteeism Behaviours of Pre-service Teachers

This study aimed to reveal the reasons of absenteeism behaviours of preservice teachers based on their views. Qualitative research method was used in this study, and the data were gathered via focus group interviews. Participants were selected via criterion sampling and maximum variation sampling methods. They were totally 12 pre-service teachers who are at different departments and grades. On the other hand, six of them were male, and six of them were female. Results showed that the reasons of absenteeism behaviours were reasons related with preservice teachers, reasons related course content and lecturers, and reasons related campus and its environment. Pre-service teachers stated that anxiety of unemployment, disliking the department, health and transportation problems were the reasons of absenteeism related with themselves. On the other hand, they listed the reasons related course content and lecturer such as not being enjoyable of lectures, low performance and lack of communication ability of lecturers, etc. Additionally, they stated that negative physical conditions, poor relationship with students, lack of social and cultural activities were the reasons related campus and its environment.Bu çalışmanın amacı, eğitim fakültesi öğrencilerinin devamsızlık nedenlerini eğitim fakültesi öğrencilerinin görüşlerine dayalı olarak belirlemektir. Nitel araştırma deseni kullanılarak yürütülen araştırmanın verileri odak grup görüşmesi tekniği kullanılarak toplanmıştır. Ölçüt örnekleme ve maksimum çeşitlilik örneklemesi teknikleri kullanılarak belirlenen araştırmanın katılımcıları farklı sınıf, bölüm ve cinsiyetteki 12 eğitim fakültesi öğrencisinden oluşmaktadır. Araştırmada elde edilen bulgulara göre; eğitim fakültesi öğrencilerinin kendilerinden kaynaklanan, ders içeriği ve sorumlusundan kaynaklanan, okul ve çevresinden kaynaklanan nedenlerle devamsızlık yaptıkları saptanmıştır. Öğrenciler, kendilerinden kaynaklanan nedenleri; okulu bitirdiğinde iş bulamama kaygısı, okuduğu bölümü sevmeme, sağlık sorunları, ulaşım problemi, okul dışında bir işte çalışma olarak sıralarken, ders içeriği ve sorumlusundan kaynaklanan nedenleri; derslerin sıkıcı geçmesi, performansın düşüklüğü, öğrencilerle iletişim yetersizliği, ders saatlerinin uzun ve fazla olması, alan dışı derslerin gereksiz olması, konuların işleniş şekli olarak sıralamıştır. Öğrenciler, okul ve çevresine ilişkin devamsızlık nedenlerini ise; okulun/sınıfın olumsuz fiziki koşulları, arkadaşlık ilişkisinin zayıf olması, üniversite eğitimine ilişkin algıları, sınıfların kalabalık olması, sosyal ve kültürel aktivite eksikliği olarak ifade etmişlerdir
