Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe gastroenteritis among children <5 years of age worldwide and is responsible for 453,000 deaths among children in this age group. More than half of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Because of the tremendous global burden of rotavirus, vaccine development and introduction has been a high priority for several international agencies, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and GAVI.
