What are partner experiences of the partner notification process, after an index case is diagnosed with chlamydia?

Chlamydia is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection (STI) worldwide (Lanjouw et al. 2010). This is also true in Scotland where prevalence is highest in under 25s (SIGN 2009; ISD 2011). Partner notification (PN) is described as the cornerstone of genitourinary medicine (GUM), yet the optimal strategy remains unclear (Ferreira et al. 2013). This is predominantly researched regarding number of partners notified or treated and re-infection rates of index cases. Research also explores preference of PN method and the experiences of index cases. To date there has been very little exploration from the perspective of partners. Partners are a large population receiving PN (McClean et al. 2012). Aim The purpose of this proposal is to explore partners' experiences of the PN process, after an index case is diagnosed with chlamydia. The study aim is to explore partner's experiences, thoughts and perceptions of PN; from initially being notified of their exposure to attending the GUM clinic for nursing care. Methods A qualitative, descriptive exploratory approach will be adopted. A purposive sample will be recruited from various GUM sites across a city in Scotland.
