An exploration of the lived experiences of tattooed women.

This research project explores the lived experiences of tattooed women. This research was informed by previous literature which states that, historically tattooed women have been discriminated against (Mifflin, 2013; Demello, 2000). That tattooing has become more popular and more people are getting tattooed (Demello, 2000). Although, tattooed individuals can sometimes face social stigma (Atkinson, 2003). Tattoos are linked with self, identity (Mun et al., 2012), beauty and feminity (Segal, 2010). Also the way in which women are represented in the media (Jones, 2014). These valuable pieces of literature provided a contextual platform form which to conduct research. Goffman (1959), Bell (1999), Foucault (1995) and Butler (2006) provided a theoretical base from which to explain complex behaviours.ba_psysocunpub2411_ethesesunpu
